Aan welke hand draag je een verlovingsring?

On which hand do you wear an engagement ring?

How is it actually "supposed" to be?
It is a question we are often asked: should an engagement ring be worn on the left or right to be worn? There is not necessarily a clear answer to this question... Sometimes the choice is based on a religious belief, a cultural norm or old traditions. Even contemporary fashion trends can have an influence. We have examined the engagement rings of some well-known personalities taken a closer look, maybe these fun facts will inspire you when making your choice.

The left hand: tradition and symbolism

In many countries, it is customary to wear the engagement ring on the ring finger of the to be worn on the left hand. This custom dates back to the time of ancient Rome where people believed in the existence of a 'vena amoris'. According to romantic myth running directly from the left ring finger to the heart. Unfortunately, this story is not scientifically correct, because this vein turns out not to to exist. But the idea still lives on in the symbolism of love and connection.

Several well-known personalities have also contributed to the classic and timeless image of the engagement ring on the left hand.

Within the royal family, wearing the engagement ring on the left hand common for many years. For example, Diana, Princess of Wales, wore her famous sapphire engagement ring on the left. And Kate Middleton also wears her engagement ring on her left ring finger (even combined with her wedding ring). Not only members of the royal family but also classic film icons from Hollywood such as Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn chose the left hand.

The right hand: contemporary and personal
Still, many people nowadays consciously choose the right hand. Sometimes this is out of practical considerations, for example because they are left-handed and prefer not to wear the ring damage. But it can also be because it better matches their style or feeling. Victoria Beckham regularly switches her rings between left and right, depending of her outfit. Oprah Winfrey is also often seen with her rings on her right hand.

Sometimes the ring is switched hands, depending on a certain occasion. And thus the engagement ring becomes not only a symbol, but also a style choice that is flexible and suitable for the right moment.

Religious belief
Traditionally, most religious beliefs have their own rules regarding is about which hand the wedding ring is worn on. Engagement rings are worn on the most religious beliefs wear it on the left hand.

For Catholics, this means that the engagement ring is moved to the other hand after marriage whether the hand is changed, or whether both rings are worn together. Protestants and followers of Islam traditionally wear the wedding ring on the right hand.
